Glossary
Some things in AnchorPoint go by more than one name — a leftover from features being renamed as the system grew. This page settles which is which.
Blended → see Virtual
Brick and Mortar → see In-Person
Cancel, Defer and Transfer
Three ways to take a student out of a class. They are not interchangeable.
| Action | Use it when | What happens to their money |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer | You know which class they're moving to. | Payments move with them. Nothing is refunded. |
| Defer | They can't attend and there's no suitable class scheduled yet. | Payments are held as credit against a future class. |
| Cancel | They're not coming back. | You decide, payment by payment — leave it, refund it in full, or refund part. |
Prefer transfer over cancel-and-re-add: cancelling restarts the balance from scratch.
Certificate: Locked and Unlocked
A locked certificate has been generated but not released — the student can't see or download it. Unlocking releases it to their portal. A certificate only exists once the student has been marked as passed.
Class Type
Three delivery types, but they're labelled inconsistently across the application:
| What you see | Where | Same as |
|---|---|---|
| In-Person | Classes tab, type chips | Stored as Brick and Mortar |
| Online | Everywhere | Self-paced online coursework |
| Virtual | Classes page tab | Virtual / Zoom, Blended |
| Virtual / Zoom | Type chip on a class or course | Virtual, Blended |
| Blended | Course Type filter on the Courses page | Virtual, Virtual / Zoom |
Virtual, Virtual / Zoom and Blended are all the same type: taught live, remotely, at a scheduled time. This help site uses Virtual throughout.

No-show and Fail
A no-show means the student never turned up. A fail means they attended and didn't pass. Marking someone as a no-show clears any result, test record and certificate-mailed date they had.
No-show doesn't apply to online registrations.
Payments (export)
The spreadsheet export of money received. It was called Deposits before v1.4.0. Same data, new name.
Receipt and Statement
Since v1.4.0 the payment record for a registration is a statement — look for Download Statement and Resend Payment Statement Email(s).
Receipt still appears in two places, and means something slightly different in each:
- Gift certificates have a purchase receipt, sent to the purchaser.
- Older emails sent before the rename still say receipt.
Refresher and Retake
- A refresher is a student registering again for a class they've already completed. The public register page notes when they completed it and lets them sign up anyway.
- A retake is re-registering a student for an online class once their registration has concluded, whether they passed or failed.
Retired: the Student Payments page
Students used to have a Payments page of their own. As of v1.4.0 it lives under Account Settings → Payments, where they can see their history across every class and manage their saved cards.
Statement → see Receipt and Statement
Surcharge
An optional percentage your organization can add to card payments, configured in Organization Settings → Payment Settings.
- It's always disclosed before the payment is submitted, and always shown as its own line rather than folded into the balance.
- Debit and prepaid cards are never surcharged. If a newly entered card's type isn't known yet, the rule is explained in words instead of a figure.
- Admins can waive it on any payment they record — the row then shows a Surcharge waived chip.
- A cash or check refund returns the principal only. The surcharge comes back only through a card refund.
Tuition adjustment
Changing what a student owes for a class, in one of three ways: a discount off the price, a new price outright, or a full waive. Any coupon appears as its own line in the breakdown rather than being mixed into the adjustment.
Adjust tuition rather than editing payment amounts to make the maths work — an adjustment records who changed the price and why.
USCG approval
Course, location, room and instructor approvals from the U.S. Coast Guard. Approvals carry an expiry date, and AnchorPoint warns you 30 days out before one lapses. See the badges in Icons & Statuses.
Virtual
Live, remote, scheduled classes. Also labelled Virtual / Zoom on chips and Blended in the Courses type filter. See Class Type above.
